Something of the Week Dec 11

Something of the week
This month's category: Super Heroes!
This week's something: Superman!

Superman is a very popular fictional character. He is widely found in comic books published by DC comics. His inventors were Jerry Siegel (an american writer), and the artist Joe Shuster. He was placed in his first comic in 1932. Superman soon appeared in television programs, movies, newspaper strips, and video games.

Superman became a successful hero, and inspired others. Eventually, an entire "superhero genre" was added to the world.
His "S" symbol often represents him.

This guy became so popular, his creators soon had to start suing for his ownership!

His powers include flight, supper-strength, invulnerability to most attacks, super-speed, X-ray vision, laser beam eyes, and super-hearing are just a few. In his earlier versions, Superman's flight ability was limited to being able to leap (really) long distances, but the animators of Superman soon asked the creators to change this ability to flight, saving lots of time moving Clark Kent around the place in films. His ability to fly was advanced even further, so that he could travel far into space with no sweat. This ability was often used by him to stop meteors from hitting Earth, or even just to take some relaxation time away from the world. Some people writing comics including him limited his abilities, like barely surviving a nuclear blast, while some other writers increased his powers, like being able to survive a nuclear blast with ease.

Well, now you know even more about the world's most popular superhero!

  1. I really like this column, it's really great. Just one thing though, when you are listing his abilities, you put an extra p in super-strengh. Just wanted to point that out. Otherwise this is great and so are the other ones. Keep up the good work!
